This expanding and prosperous burgh offers the
visitor good serviced accommodation, a variety
of leisure and shopping facilities, and as wide
a range of tourist attractions as can be found
anywhere. Inverurie is 17 miles north west of Aberdeen
and has good road and rail links, being on the
main route from Aberdeen to Inverness.
It is also an ancient Royal Burgh, the main town of the province of the Garioch,
with much to show that the communities have thrived here since prehistory. It
was said to be founded by the great great grandfather of Robert the Bruce, David
of Huntingdon, Earl of Garioch.
The earliest known Charter dates from 1558 but it's modern development occurred
after the building of the Aberdeen Canal linking Port Elphinstone with Aberdeen
Harbour in 1806. |

There are many Bronze Age and Pictish
relics and castles to be found in the vicinity
as well as the sites of two decisive battles, the
Battle of Barra fought by Robert the Bruce against
his rival Comyn in 1308 & the Battle of Harlaw
fought in defence of the East by Red Harlaw against
the Lord of the Isles in 1411. Today Inverurie is a peaceful town,
with surrounding countryside displaying beautiful
contrasts of river valley, green or golden fields,
thick forests and rough heather clad slopes |

The best-loved hill in the Grampian Highlands, Bennachie,
is close at hand. There are delightful gardens
and country parks to visit, whilst the splendours
of Upper Donside, Royal Deeside, and coastal beaches
and fishing village, are within easy driving distance.
One of the highlights of the year is the Doric
Festival, held throughout October, focusing on
local tradition and culture. The town has a library,
museum, community centre and sporting facilities
that include bowling, fishing, tennis, football,
a swimming pool and an 18 hole golf course.

A centre of locomotive engineering
between 1902 an 1968, Inverurie is now a paper
making town with food processing, refrigeration,
glass fibre and water treatment equipment industries
located on two industrial estates.
Inverurie is also home to one of Europe's most
modern mart complexes, the Thainstone Agricultural
Centre. |
